Worsted Weight Socks

I am going to be teaching my local fiber guild sock knitting in about a month. Since the meetings are fairly short (about 2 hours) I was thinking about having them knit short socks (like maybe 7 rows before starting the heel flap) on worsted weight yarn. But I have not knit socks with worsted weight yarn. Any suggestions for worsted weight yarn suitable for socks? What size needles should we use? Any good patterns out there?

Thanks so much for you help.

I think that Yankee Knitter Pattern #29 is a great pattern to learn with. It also has all sizes and all weights of yarn. It's a simple, straight forward pattern

Lorna's Laces Worsted is nice to work with and the socks feel comfy.
I used a plain rib pattern as they were for DH who is in the forces.
too long a length for a class at about 14" leg.

You could try the Horcrux socks, which were a free pattern recently posted on Susan Lawrence's blog. She posted the sock in episodes, and did not reveal the name until the end. Here is a link to her blog, and you can find the pattern if you scroll down on the left side of the page.

The name refers to Harry Potter lore, by the way.

I'm just starting the same type of project, using the Universal toe-up sock pattern by Amy Swenson on Knitty (summer 06). Just adapt it to fit any yarn and any foot size!
